C.F. Martin & Co.
C. F. Martin & Co. was already established in 1833. C.F. Martin was born in Germany, where he had learned to build guitars as part of a long family tradition. In 1833 he emigrated to the United States and first established a relatively modest guitar workshop in New York. By 1858 the business had expanded and a factory employing guitar makers was established in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.
Today, Martin is still one of the world's leading guitar brands and is associated with many famous artists. Can you think of any famous guitarist who plays a Martin?
For us here at Oscar Guitars, Martin has a special place in our hearts. Oscar Björklund himself did both his apprenticeship as a guitar builder and later took his journeyman's certificate in Martin's place of origin, Markneukirchen, Germany, a mecca for musical instrument building for over 350 years.
Many years ago we had the opportunity to purchase a unique violin built by the company founder's great-grandfather, built in 1754, and today it is on display in our shop. A piece of music history that we have discussed many times with museums both in the USA and in Germany. See first link below for more info.
